SUMMARY:BHC Youth Development Subcommittee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The BHC is a community-member driven initiative designed for Brownsville residents to achieve economic mobility. The BHC will work to generate revenue as a community and to disrupt systems that contribute to a lack of economic progress. This begins with subcommittees in 5 focus areas: Access\, Self-Sufficiency\, Ownership\, Youth Development\, and Civic Engagement. \n\nIn our research\, we found that community members\, organization leaders and more\, found themselves asking: How do we get and keep young folks engaged and in the room? There are many programs and initiatives aimed at Brownsville youth\, and we hope to come together to learn what has succeeded in the community\, what has failed\, and what else needs to be done.\n\nWe will begin the meeting hearing from a group of local youth\, who have created a comprehensive safety report\, surveyed their peers and created a plan for their future in the neighborhood. \n\nThis discussion will be led by BHC and BCJC staff on November 4th\, and held at the Brownsville Community Justice Center on 50 Belmont Avenue.

SUMMARY:NYC Child Support Pay it Off Program
DESCRIPTION:A limited-time program called Pay It Off may help you lower the amount you owe in child support. See Link Below! \nOffered from October 17\, 2022 to October 31\, 2022\, Pay It Off doubles the value of the payment (up to the amount you owe) that you make toward child support debt that is permanently owed to the New York City Department of Social Services (NYC DSS). When you make a minimum payment of $500\, OCSS will match that amount to reduce your debt owed to DSS. \nIf your court order is actively charging\, you must first pay the total amount of your most recent current support court ordered obligation that is due in October\, if that has not yet been satisfied.  The amount taken to pay current support will not be matched. If the remainder no longer exceeds $500\, it will not be matched based on the Pay It Off criteria. \nMore than 3\,000 noncustodial parents have participated in a Pay It Off program to reduce $16 million of debt owed to the NYC Department of Social Services (DSS). The average debt reduction per case is $5\,558. Don’t miss this opportunity to lower or eliminate your DSS child support debt!

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Public Hearing on City Council Redistricting
DESCRIPTION:New York City Council Map Redistricting \nWhy is this important? \nThe New York City Council districts are redrawn every 10 years to reflect the information gathered during the US Census. City Council districts decide which candidate covers their specific area of NYC\, and those candidates get to decide on how to spend about $5 million annually. This includes tasks such as paving roads\, building playgrounds and distributing funds to non profits. \nSo\, who decides this? \nThe Districting Commission\, a group of 15 individuals; 5 members chosen by the majority party (one from each borough); 3 from the minority party (each from a different borough); the last 7 are chosen by the mayor. Once these 15 people finalize the map\, it cannot be changed by city council or the mayor. \nWhat should we look out for? \nThere are many rules set by the City Charter for the redistricting process. Here are just a few that we find essential: \nKeep neighborhoods and communities of interest intact. Residents who share histories\, religions\, economic systems\, countries of origin\, etc. should not be harmed during the process. This includes public spaces like parks\, schools and waterfronts. \nPrevent partisan gerrymandering. No lines should be drawn that hinders voters based on political party. \nProtect minority vote. Lines cannot be drawn to diminish the voting power of racial or language minority groups. \nA full report of the redistricting process can be found here. If you would like to see an interactive map of each NYC district and their changes\, click here. \nPublic Hearings \nThe Districting Commission has created a series of hearings to discuss the upcoming changes\, and hear from residents impacted by the changes. Anyone can submit a written\, in-person\, or virtual statement. They’re even accepting handwritten map proposals! The Brooklyn hearing will be held on Sunday\, August 21st at 3:30PM. You can join in-person at Medgar Evers College\, School of Science & Technology Dining Hall (1638 Bedford Ave). Virtual participation is encouraged! The Zoom and YouTube links will be provided closer to the event.
